IN OUR LAST NEWLETTER I MENTIONED A BOOK I HAD JUST READ CALLED. "MINDLESS EATING" BY BRIAN WANSINK. THIS IS A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WHO WANT TO UNDERSTAND WHY YOU EAT MORE THAN YOU THINK. LAST WEEK I RECEIVED AN E-MAIL FROM BRAD. BRAD IS ONE OF OUR FITNESS CONSULTANTS. HE JUST FINISHED THE BOOK AND I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU WHAT HE SHARED WITH ME.

Thanks to some very frustrating airport delays yesterday, I managed to finish off  "Mindless Eating" by Brian Wansink.

This book did not disappoint me. Almost every page had great facts about the way food is marketed and the factors that make us decide to eat.

This book is definitely in my list of top-ten must-read nutrition books.

I've been racking my brains trying to figure out the top lesson I learnt from this book so that I could share it with you, and I think I have it.

You know how everybody these days seems to be blaming the food companies for our obesity problem - As if it's some giant conspiracy.

Well the number one thing I learnt from "Mindless Eating" is that there is no "fat conspiracy".

Food companies do not care if you EAT their foods. They only care if you BUY their foods and continue to BUY their foods.

The people at McDonalds don't care if you buy a happy meal, turn around and throw it in the garbage, just as long as you buy the happy meal.

Also, food isn't designed to be "fattening" (Whatever that means). Food is designed to be inexpensive for the companies to make and desirable enough for you to repeatedly purchase.

This is the great conspiracy. Yes food companies, restaurants and shopping centers go to great lengths to figure out how to make us BUY there food, but we are the ones making the decision to EAT the food.

WHAT'S GOING ON 

Exercise saves you money" and "Health Costs Will Surge Without Better
Prevention" we have all seen the newspaper headlines but if you ever thought that exercise and good nutrition was just about health, you may want to think again.

"The cost of caring for aging Canadian will add approximately 25 percent to the nation's health care bill by 2030 unless people act now to stay healthy." This means more of our tax money going to keep our health care system going. This means our you and I, and our kids will pay and keep on paying for our poor eating and fitness habits.

The article continues...

"Currently, 80 percent of Canadian 65 or older have at least one chronic disease
that could lead to premature death and disability."

The good news is the vast majority of disease is preventable.
That's right -- the vast majority. Why? Because the majority is self-induced.

Most people are sick because they do not take proper care of themselves until it's
too late. The good news is sick people can feel better through exercise and proper eating.
The better news is healthy people can add years to their lives and save billions in
health care government spending by eating right and exercising.

Can you see the pattern forming here?

"Given the demographics, the economic impact on healthcare will be enormous,"
said Dr. Richard Murray, a vice president at Merck & Co. Inc "If people adopt healthier lifestyles, they may not develop the expensive, chronic diseases that raise health costs sharply, such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease."

Did he just mention that the Top 3 killers could decrease and even stopped if individual started eating right and exercise?

The report concluded with this statement:

"We have the opportunity for prevention," Merck's Murray said. "We need to be serious
about it."

He is correct. Exercise and nutrition does not need to be boring, but it does need to be taken seriously.

A large percentage of our clients usually wait until life takes a bite out of them until they get off their couch and take action. Fortunately, it is never too late to experience the joy of being fit and healthy.

Now I've just given you one more reason to continue eating well and exercising. If we can lower health care cost, then our government will save billions, and we could demand a health care tax rebate. If you exercise and eat right your taxes should be lowered. Just a thought.
